‘If it hurts then say so from the start! Idiot.’ Fai gave him a stare of disapproval.

‘Bastard!’ Kurogane shot back with a look of indigence.

‘When you’re with others, there are more things you can’t hide. If they find out later, it’ll be more painful for Shoran-kun and Mokona.’ Fai had learned this lesson the hard way.

Kurogane sulked for a minute before glancing back towards Fai. The pupil of his golden eye was still a thin sliver as he stared at Kurogane’s bleeding arm. ‘Hey!’ He said as he squinted his eyes. ‘We shouldn’t just let it go to waste.’ He cocked his head and shrugged his good shoulder.
Fai let out a short breath and barley smiled. ‘True’ he said.

….

‘Well,’ Fai said as he licked his lips and looked intently at the wires feeding into Kurogane’s arm, ‘Maybe we could go to piffle world after all of this and get it fixed.’

‘And how exactly are we gonna get to piffle world?’ Kurogane gave him usual doubtful glare.

‘Ha! Who knows,’ Fai said quietly as he smiled ‘Perhaps that witch will let us go for free.’ Kurogane couldn’t help but smirk. The thought of the witch giving them anything for free was truly laughable. The smirk faded as he looked down at the numb fingers of his left arm. We really have sacrificed a lot, he thought as his gaze shifted to the black patch in front of him where a blue eye should have been. But as his gazed relaxed he noticed the golden eye to its left looking back up at him intently. His face softened as he realized who that look belong to. But we’ve gained more than even the witch could have foreseen. Looking into that face that stared so expectantly back up at him, Kurogane knew that it had all been worth it. His right hand, which had been resting on Fai’s shoulder now stretched out to pull Fai closer to him as he leaned his head forward to rest on Fai’s other shoulder. He let out a deep sigh as he felt the warmth of Fai’s chest seep into his.

Fai hadn’t moved. His gaze was still fixed on the spot where Kurogane’s eyes had been. As he listened to Kurogane’s steady, relaxed breathing the tears that had been threatening his eyelashes finally trickled down onto his cheek. He trembled and tried to form coherent thoughts, but all he could manage was to whisper the words that seemed so inadequate.
‘Thank you.’

Kurogane’s head came back up to look at the tears that streamed down Fai’s face. ‘Thank you,’ he said again as his face shifted to revile a pained expression. ‘Thank you for loving me….I…I never actually believed it would be possible…and…even now I still like I’m going to wake up and all of this will be a dream.’ Kurogane’s hand came up to rest on Fai’s cheek. If there had been tears on that cheek he would have wiped them away.

‘Thank you for letting me,’ Kurogane said in a low steady tone. ‘You are the only one I’ve been able to protect. You are the only one who has truly let me love you.’ All this statement served to do was increase the number of tears flowing down Fai’s pale cheek. Kurogane’s grip tightened on the back of Fai’s jaw bone as he pulled him closer. He leaned in and gently touched his chapped lips to Fai’s trembling ones.
They stayed like that for what seemed like a very long time until Kurogane felt Fai release the breath that he had been holding as he slowly sank away from Kurogane. Kurogane opened his eyes in time to see Fai’s eyelashes flicker in the attempt to stay awake. His own head felt suddenly heavy as he fought to keep it from falling. He felt Fai become heavy in his right arm as he realized that he own legs could no longer support him and slid down the wall, landed on the floor. He looked down to see that Fai had already lost consciousness and was laying in his arms. He finally lost the battle to keep his own eyes open as his head fell back against the wall. He was instantly asleep.
